Multiply length × width × depth in feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. Pea gravel weighs about 1.4 tons per cubic yard.
How deep to lay pea gravel
Use 2 inches for walkways and patios and 3–4 inches for high-traffic or vehicle areas. Because the rounded stones shift underfoot, an edging or border keeps pea gravel contained.
Base and fabric
Lay pea gravel over landscape fabric and, for patios, a compacted base of crushed stone. This stops the small stones from sinking into soft soil and keeps weeds from pushing through.
