How much gravel do I need?
Multiply length × width × depth (in feet) for cubic feet, divide by 27 for cubic yards. Gravel weighs roughly 1.4 tons per cubic yard.
How deep should gravel be?
Use 2–3 inches for walkways and decorative beds, and 4–6 inches for driveways — often in two compacted layers over a base. Deeper coverage over landscape fabric keeps stone from sinking into the soil.
Yards and tons
Measure area and depth, convert to cubic yards, and remember gravel weighs roughly 1.4 tons per cubic yard. Many suppliers sell by the ton, so having both figures lets you order confidently either way.
How to use this calculator
- 1Measure length and width of the area in feet.
