How many bundles of shingles do I need?
One roofing square (100 sq ft) needs 3 bundles of standard shingles. Divide roof area by 100 for squares, multiply by 3, and add ~10% waste.
Roofing squares and bundles
Roofing is measured in squares — 100 sq ft each. One square of standard architectural shingles takes 3 bundles. Divide your roof area by 100, multiply by 3, and add about 10% for waste and starter/hip-and-ridge caps.
Measuring a roof
Roof area is larger than your home's footprint because of the slope. If you can't measure on the roof safely, multiply the footprint by a pitch factor (about 1.05–1.4 depending on steepness).
