How much topsoil do I need?
Multiply length × width × depth in feet for cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. A cubic yard of topsoil covers about 100 sq ft at 3 inches.
Estimating topsoil
For new beds, plan 4–6 inches of topsoil; for leveling or top-dressing a lawn, ½–1 inch is plenty. Measure the area and fill depth, then convert to cubic yards — one yard covers about 100 sq ft at 3 inches.
Weight and delivery
Screened topsoil weighs roughly 1.1–1.4 tons per cubic yard dry, and more when wet, so check delivery weight limits. Bagged soil (about 0.75 cu ft per 40 lb bag) suits small jobs; bulk is cheaper past a yard.
How to use this calculator
- 1Measure the length and width of the area in feet.
- 2Choose the fill depth in inches.
- 3Read cubic yards, bags, and weight from the results.
